How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews

Ask ChatGPT or Gemini "who's the best dentist in Mississauga?" and you'll get a short, confident answer naming two or three practices. For those businesses, it's a stream of pre-qualified leads. For everyone else, it's silence. So how do you become one of the names the AI recommends? Start by understanding how these engines actually decide.

How AI engines choose who to recommend

AI assistants learn about your business in two ways:

  • Training data — the vast snapshot of the web the model learned from. Businesses that are widely and consistently mentioned online are more likely to be "known."
  • Real-time retrieval (grounding) — most modern assistants also fetch live results as they answer. Google's AI Overviews and Gemini draw on Google's index; ChatGPT's search draws heavily on Bing. Perplexity crawls the live web.

This has a powerful implication: being visible in Google and Bing directly feeds the AI answers. Your traditional SEO and your Business Profile aren't separate from GEO — they're inputs to it.

From there, the engines weigh authority, consistency, reviews, structured data, and third-party corroboration to decide who's trustworthy enough to name.

8 ways to become the business AI recommends

1. Get your structured data right

Add schema markup (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ) so engines can read exactly who you are, where you operate, what you offer, and your reviews — without guessing.

2. Lock down NAP consistency and citations

Your Name, Address and Phone must match identically across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing, Apple, and directories. Inconsistency makes AI less confident you're a single, real, trustworthy entity.

3. Win reviews — and respond to them

Review volume, average rating, recency, and owner responses are among the strongest signals AI uses to gauge quality. A steady flow of recent 5-star reviews does more than almost anything else.

4. Claim and optimize your profiles everywhere

Google Business Profile is essential, but don't stop there — Bing Places (feeds ChatGPT/Copilot) and Apple Business Connect (feeds Siri/Apple Maps) matter too. Complete every field: categories, services, hours, photos.

5. Publish answer-shaped content

Write clear pages and FAQs that directly answer the questions customers ask ("How much does Invisalign cost in Mississauga?"). AI engines prefer content that is easy to extract and quote.

6. Earn third-party mentions

Being referenced on reputable directories, local publications, and partner sites builds the corroboration AI looks for. One mention on a trusted local site can outweigh a lot of self-promotion.

7. Make your site AI-crawlable

Explicitly allow AI crawlers (GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot) in your robots.txt, and add an llms.txt that summarizes who you are and what you do. If the bots can't read you, they can't recommend you.

8. Build topical + local authority

Become the obvious expert for your service in your city. Depth of relevant, location-specific content signals to both search and AI that you're the authority for "[service] in [city]."

The new "rank check": just ask the AI

You no longer have to guess. Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and ask the exact questions your customers would — "best [your service] in [your city]." Note whether you're mentioned, who is, and how you're described. Repeat monthly to track your progress. This is the AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — equivalent of checking your Google rankings.

The bottom line

Getting recommended by AI isn't luck or a trick — it's the compounding result of being genuinely visible, consistent, well-reviewed, and machine-readable. Do the eight things above, and you shift from invisible to the business the AI names first.
